The royal or crowned crane (Balearica regulorum) is a bird that is easily recognised by its distinctive crown of stiff golden feathers on its head.
Standing around one metre tall, the crowned crane has long legs and a slender neck, giving it an elegant appearance. These birds are often seen in wetlands, swamps and meadows. Their diet is omnivorous, including insects, small vertebrates, seeds and plants.
